A Practical Movement Break for Drivers on Long Road Stretches
Plan breaks at suitable stopping places and move only when securely parked. A stretch cannot make a sleepy driver fit to continue.

A movement break on a long drive starts with a safe place to stop. Do not stretch, watch an exercise video or adjust your sitting position in ways that distract you while driving.
If you are sleepy, a short walk or stretch is not a reliable way to make continued driving safe.
Plan stops before the journey
Identify suitable service areas or rest stops and allow time to use them. Do not rely on a highway shoulder, a traffic lane or the edge of a busy car park as an exercise space.
Stop sooner if you need to. A planned interval is not permission to keep driving when you are tired or unwell. Follow local road rules and professional driving requirements where relevant.
Move only after the vehicle is securely parked
When it is safe to get out, an easy walk in a designated pedestrian area may be enough. Check traffic, footing, lighting and weather before leaving the vehicle.
If remaining seated is more practical, you could try comfortable ankle or shoulder movements while parked. Keep the range small and avoid forcing a neck or back stretch. The car roof or door is not automatically suitable balance support.
There is no need for a fixed two- or five-minute exercise sequence. Stop any movement that causes discomfort or makes you unsteady.
Treat drowsiness separately
If you become sleepy, stop in a safe place and make a plan for rest or another driver. NHTSA emphasises adequate sleep; short-term measures do not replace it. Do not judge yourself fit to continue simply because movement made you feel briefly more alert.
Do not stretch away concerning symptoms
New unexplained leg swelling, pain, warmth or discoloration after prolonged travel needs prompt medical advice. Sudden breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up blood or fainting needs emergency help. Do not continue driving yourself while seriously unwell.
A rest-stop routine is not treatment for a blood clot or an injury. For a related practical question, read How to Change Position During a Long Car Journey Safely.
