What Your Yoga Teacher’s Lineage Can (and Can't) Tell You

When you see a yoga studio or teacher highlight their lineage, it is often presented as a badge of authenticity. You might read about a direct connection to a specific master or a centuries-old tradition. While these stories can provide a window into a teacher’s influences and the community they belong to, they are not a substitute for verifying a teacher’s current training, safety standards, and pedagogical approach.
The promise of lineage
In a modern yoga context, lineage typically refers to a historical chain of transmission. UNESCO describes yoga as a diverse living Indian tradition transmitted through teachers, communities, institutions, texts, and modern media. When a teacher claims a lineage, they are signaling that their practice was shaped by a specific set of interpretations and methods passed down through that chain.
For a student, this can be helpful. It suggests the teacher is working within a framework that has been refined over time. It provides a sense of continuity and can help you understand the "flavor" of the practice you are about to enter. However, Remember that lineage is not a static, verifiable fact. It is a living, evolving transmission. What was taught fifty years ago in a different cultural context may look very different from a class held in a busy urban studio today.
