A Seven-Minute Morning Routine for When You Wake Up Late
Use an optional short pause when you wake up late, or skip it if essential tasks need the time.

If you wake up late, deal with what is essential before adding a movement routine. You can skip practice completely. Seven minutes is an optional window, not a minimum you need to complete to rescue the morning.
Check whether the time is really available
Do you need those minutes to get dressed, take prescribed medicine, eat or leave without rushing? If so, use them for that. Do not turn a missed alarm into a faster exercise session or sacrifice a safe journey to finish a timer.
A flexible seven-minute example
If you have time, feel well and want a brief pause, you could use the window like this:
- Take about a minute to settle into a comfortable position and decide what you want to do.
- Use up to four minutes for a familiar, comfortable activity or quiet rest. You do not need to learn new stretches from a list or force a breathing pattern.
- Leave the remaining time to stop, put things away and get ready for the next part of the day.
These times are a scheduling example, not a health prescription. You can stop earlier or use the whole window for rest. There is no evidence here that exactly seven minutes clears stiffness or changes how the rest of the day will go.
Keep the space and activity suitable
Do not block a shared walkway or begin floor movements where people are trying to get ready. Choose an activity you understand and have room to do, or leave it out.
Stop for pain, dizziness or other concerning symptoms. If a breathing or relaxation exercise makes you uncomfortable, return to normal breathing and choose something else. Relaxation practices do not suit everyone and should not replace needed care.
Look beyond one late morning
If tiredness or sleep difficulties keep disrupting daily life, seek appropriate healthcare advice. NHLBI recommends allowing enough time for sleep; adding another routine is not a substitute for that opportunity.
For an occasional rushed morning, you can simply continue the day. There is no need to make up the missed minutes later.
